WHO WE ARE: We are a growing group of teachers and parents concerned with the direction of education in California. We have come together to educate ourselves on the issues, identify the real problems and create real solutions. We are concerned with how standardized testing is affecting the daily instruction of students. We want schools that are focused on best teaching practices, not raising test scores. We want students to be critical thinkers and problem solvers not just good test takers. Our voices have been left out of the process. Our voices will be heard. WHY WE ARE ORGANIZING: The current politics of education in California is based on a political agenda, with support of conservative business groups, politicians of both parties, and many journalists. Reforms are being implemented based on political agendas not sound educational theory, research or practice. Parents and educators have the best understanding of what our schools need. We must be a part of the debate on accountability, standards, assessments and best teaching practices. We do not feel that our voices have been heard. WHAT WE ARE DOING: Though we are concerned with a variety of issues facing California schools, we are currently focusing on the use of standardized testing and state academic standards. We are meeting every month to discuss issues, write letters and plan forums for public discussion of the issues. We welcome more participants. There are several ways you can participate, ranging from coming to meetings, to distributing fliers, to making phone calls or setting up child care for meetings and events. Join us!
